What to Expect During Your First IV Therapy Session

Your First IV — Everything You Need to Know

If you’ve never had IV therapy outside of a hospital, the idea of a nurse coming to your home or hotel to start an IV might feel unfamiliar. That’s normal. Most of our first-time clients have the same questions: Does it hurt? How long does it take? What do I need to do?

Here’s the full walkthrough — from the moment you book to the moment the needle comes out.

Before Your Session

Step 1: Book Your Appointment

Book online at thirstivsociety.com/book-now or call (786) 305-3555. You’ll choose:

  • Your IV drip (hangover recovery, immune boost, Myers’ Cocktail, etc.)
  • Your preferred date and time
  • Your location (home, hotel, office, or any address in Miami-Dade/Broward)

Step 2: Prepare (Minimal)

  • Eat something — Don’t come to your session on a completely empty stomach. A light snack is fine
  • Wear a short-sleeve shirt — The IV goes in your arm, usually at the inner elbow or forearm. Short sleeves or a sleeve you can roll up makes it easy
  • Have a comfortable spot — A couch, bed, or recliner. You’ll be sitting or lying down for 30–45 minutes
  • Stay hydrated — Drink some water before your appointment. Well-hydrated veins are easier (and less painful) to access

During Your Session

Step 3: Health Screening (2–3 Minutes)

Your nurse will ask about:

  • Current medications
  • Known allergies
  • Medical conditions
  • Current symptoms
  • Pregnancy status

This is a safety requirement, not a formality. It ensures the IV ingredients are appropriate for you and identifies any contraindications. Be honest — your nurse isn’t there to judge, they’re there to keep you safe.

Step 4: Vital Signs (1–2 Minutes)

Your nurse will check your blood pressure and may take your pulse. This is standard clinical practice before any IV procedure.

Step 5: IV Insertion (30 Seconds – 2 Minutes)

Here’s the part everyone asks about. Let’s be direct:

  • Does it hurt? — You’ll feel a brief pinch when the needle goes in. It’s comparable to a blood draw. Once the catheter is in place, the needle is removed and you shouldn’t feel pain — just a slight awareness of the IV line in your arm
  • Where does it go? — Usually the inner elbow (antecubital fossa) or the top of the forearm. Your nurse will find the best vein
  • What if I have bad veins? — Our nurses are experienced with difficult vein access. They may use a tourniquet, warm compress, or choose an alternative vein site. If you know you’re a difficult stick, mention it upfront
  • Can I look away? — Absolutely. Many clients look at their phone during insertion. Your nurse will let you know when it’s done

Step 6: The Infusion (30–45 Minutes)

Once the IV is running, you just… relax. Here’s what to expect:

  • You might feel a cool sensation — The IV fluid is room temperature, which can feel slightly cool entering your vein. This is normal
  • You might taste vitamins — Some people notice a slight metallic or vitamin taste during B-vitamin or Magnesium infusions. Normal and harmless
  • You might feel a warm flush — Especially with Magnesium. A brief warm sensation is common and passes quickly
  • You can do whatever you want — Watch TV, scroll your phone, work on your laptop, take a nap, or just close your eyes. The IV bag hangs on a portable stand. You can even get up to use the bathroom (your nurse will help manage the line)

Step 7: Removal (30 Seconds)

When the bag is empty, your nurse removes the IV catheter (painless), applies a small bandage, and has you hold pressure for a minute to prevent bruising. Done.

After Your Session

How You’ll Feel

  • Immediately — Most people feel more hydrated and alert within minutes. If you came in hungover or dehydrated, the difference is dramatic and fast
  • 1–2 hours later — Energy levels improve. Brain fog clears. Nausea (if you had any) is usually completely gone
  • 24–48 hours — Full vitamin benefits kick in. Skin looks more hydrated. Energy is noticeably better. Sleep quality may improve
  • Some people feel tired — This is actually normal, especially if your body was running on adrenaline and the IV allowed you to finally relax. If you feel sleepy, take a nap — your body is recovering

Post-Session Tips

  • Keep the bandage on for 30 minutes — Prevents bruising at the injection site
  • Continue drinking water — The IV kick-starts your hydration, but keep it going
  • Eat normally — No dietary restrictions after IV therapy
  • Light bruising is normal — A small bruise at the IV site may appear and will fade in 2–3 days. It’s cosmetic, not a concern
  • Resume normal activities — You can drive, work out, go to dinner — whatever you want. There are no restrictions

Common First-Timer Questions

Is it safe?

Yes. All our treatments are administered by licensed Registered Nurses using sterile, single-use equipment and pharmaceutical-grade ingredients, under physician supervision. Read our complete safety guide.

How do I know which drip to choose?

If you’re unsure, start with a Myers’ Cocktail — it’s the most versatile, evidence-based option. Or call us at (786) 305-3555 and describe how you’re feeling. We’ll recommend the right drip.

What if I’m afraid of needles?

You’re not alone — many of our clients are. Our nurses are gentle, experienced, and patient. Tips: look away during insertion, take slow breaths, and remember that the actual needle stick lasts about one second. Once the IV is in, there’s no needle — just a flexible plastic catheter.

Can I get an IV if I’m sick?

Yes — our Immune Boost IV is specifically designed for illness support. Just let your nurse know your symptoms during the health screening so they can tailor the treatment.

What if I need to cancel?

We understand plans change. Contact us as early as possible to reschedule. Check our booking page for our cancellation policy.

Ready to Try It?

Now you know exactly what to expect. No surprises. No anxiety. Just 30–45 minutes and you’ll feel the difference.
